A very shinny birthday

Birthday's are a somewhat minor affair in our household, at least for the adults. Unless we are talking about one of the "big ones". However, this year I made a minor exception to the low key birthday tradition and took Amanda and the girls on a surprise road trip to someplace shine!

Innsbruck is around 2 hours away by car and we still haven't actually been to visit. So I convinced everyone to load into the car with the promise of snacks and shiny objects and away we went. With mom playing DJ and the girls doing their best T-Swift impressions we made it to Innsbruck in seemingly no time. Yet all were a bit confused when the car didn't turn off the highway and head into town for the expected lunch and city walking tour.

The secret was short lived however as once we got near Innsbruck signs for the Swarovski Crystal Worlds started appearing. The kids were a little slow on the uptake but Amanda can spot a diversion from miles away and caught on to my gambit almost immediately. Undeterred, I pressed and after a quick stop for lunch at a local pizzeria we made it to the Museum.

While I had done some research on the museum several weeks before I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was certain whatever was hiding behind the waterfall spouting face in the mountain would surely be fascinating.

And we were not disappointed. After entering under the waterfall the first room greets you with the largest cut crystal in the world at 310,000 carats! Charlotte and Olivia were fully enamored with it.

So much so they hardly paid notice to the full sized Crystal adorned horse that was watching over them.

After literally pulling them away from the giant crystal we came to a winter wonderland complete with "snow" that was accentuated by crystals in the scenery and and one the trees. It's a little hard to see in the photos but the entire room was glistening.

Charlotte, my little snow bunny, was very happy in the fantastical winter wonderland. Olivia on the other was not!

With Mom and O shivering we moved onto the next area. A room completely covered in glass and mirrors with a platform suspended out into the middle. Behind the some of the glass sections were various crystal sculptures and ornaments and every so often the light would shift and the new source would bring even more shiny spectacles into view!

After the sudden appearance of the crystal skull startled C we moved on to a room devoted to Swarovski Crystals in pop culture. Here you could see pieces designed for icons from Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe to David Bowie, Madonna and Elton John to contemporaries such as Katie Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

There were several other rooms that contained various illusions generated by various effects all playing off the reflective and refractive qualities of the crystals which were impossible to capture effectively. Although the glowing crystal sun that Charlotte was trying to control with her "magical powers" was subdued enough to capture, even if Charlotte couldn't harness it.

And not to be outdone Olivia had to have a go as well!

But one of our favorite displays was the Crystal Christmas display!

Once through museum we wandered the several acres of outdoor displays which included a mirror pond with crystal clouds and giant jelly fish jumping out of the water!

Amanda even got a little jewelry out of the trip. Although she won't show it off until she gets a new dress to pair with it. I think I've been had guys!

Girl Power at the Pumpkin Patch

It’s a little comforting in the crazy world of expat-ing (is that a word?) to get to do something twice. To have an inclination of what is happening before it happens. It's not a feeling I have very often at the moment.

We had such a good time at the Bächlihof pumpkin patch last year that it was top of my list of fall activities to repeat. My thoughts of returning some of their hay from the hay bale maze from last year that is still stuck in my car, however, sadly, did not come to fruition.

This year’s theme was “Woman Power” and the sculptures included:
  • Pippi Longstocking
  • Mental load
  • Queen bee
  • Elsa the ice princess
  • Justicia with scales
  • Bertha Benz
  • Wandering Witch

They have a café to buy pumpkin themed treats or a whole host of pumpkin varieties to purchase as well.

And finally they have a hay maze / pit that the 10 and under crowd can climb in while the 40 and over crowd have a glass of wine.

The car will never be the same. Sigh.

The Pearl of the Danube

Night trains, medieval churches, river boat tours, goulash and lots of bridges. Our recent trip to Budapest was jam packed with new experiences and loads of memories!

Our trip started at 11PM local time when we boarded the night train to Budapest just on the other side of the Liechtenstein/Switzerland border in Buchs. While never having traveled this train before we are actual quite familiar with it as it passes our apartment on its way from Zurich to Budapest every night. So even though it was well past bedtime for the girls we allowed them to stay awake so we could wave at our building as the train whizzed by.

We found our cabin!

Look where I am Mommy!

A few moments later

Good morning sunshine :)

We arrived in Budapest around 9 AM the next morning and my parents were eagerly awaiting our arrival at the station. By the time we got to the apartment and got refreshed from the train ride it was already lunch time so rather than doing any major touring we walked through the Jewish quarter and then found a playground for the girls to get some energy out at. We ended the day back at the apartment watching our beloved Texas Rangers take on Baltimore Orioles in the Divisional Series of the MLB Playoffs on an iPad since the apartment didn't have a tv (spoiler alert: Rangers won the game 3-2).

Carl Lutz was a Swiss diplomat who worked to save an estimated 60,000 Hungarian Jews
during the Holocaust. This statue, dedicated to him, depicts Lutz as a golden angel,
descending from the heavens to help a fallen victim.

Our second day of touring we probably over did it a little bit. We took a tram down to the river and then walked along the Danube past the parliament building on our way to Margaret Island. The island is quite large (1.5 miles long and .4 miles wide) and has an even longer history with settlements dating back to at least the 12th century. Today it is recreational area for locals and tourists alike with running/walking trails, outdoor gym (think smaller Venice Beach LA), sports and water parks, hotels, natural spas and more all intermingling throughout the island alongside several historical sites. Our visit took most of the day and by the time we made it back to watch game two of the divisional series we had accumulated more than 20,000 steps (I'm sure Charlotte was close to 40k as she walked everywhere we did and then ran, skipped and danced around the island constantly as well)!

The "east" side of the island within the Danube river. The west side of the river across
the island is equal in size!

The next several days were a bit of a blur if I'm honest. In the span of 4 days we found our favorite coffee shop, toured Parliament, visited the Dohány Street Synagogue, went to multiple museums covering the history and local art of Hungary, made our way across the Danube to see the "older" areas of Buda and found what may be the greatest playground in all of Europe! All while keeping up with MLB playoffs back in Texas.

This is definitely in the running for Best Hot Chocolate on the planet.

Just one of multiple enclosed climbing areas in one of the most impressive playgrounds I've ever seen.

We finished out the last few days in Budapest with an evening cruise on the Danube, A stroll through the local market on date night, actual date night (highly recommend taking some grandparents on vacation with you so you can escape a time or two!), a private Piano concert and then the night train back home.

She loves me. Don't let her face fool you.

Not sure I got what I ordered!

but it came with wine so we were all good

All aboard for the train ride home!

It was a bit of a whirlwind trip but we all had a great time and came away with very impressed with the size, hospitality and culture of Budapest!
