Last weekend Amanda and I made another one of our weekend
escapes from Bristol in order to see a bit more of this wonderful country. We
decided on a trip up to Coventry and the medieval charms of Warwick Castle. I
say that with tongue firmly planted in cheek since most locals here tend to
look at you sideways when you mention you are going on holiday to Coventry.
Apparently, it doesn’t make the top ten list of Great British Holiday Destinations.
Anyway we thought Warwick Castle looked interesting, if not
a little campy, and decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately my camera wasn’t
nearly as impressed so instead of getting to show you all pictures of the late
1700’s hotel we stayed in, the scenery surrounding Warwick Castle, photos of a
bald eagle flying within arm’s reach of my head during the birds of prey exhibit,
or even my supreme marksmanship with the bow and arrow and we somehow lost
about 50 photos. The only pictures that
survived the trip are of the giant trebuchet.
And it really is a giant.
After getting up close to this rather daunting siege weapon,
we, along with several thousand other visitors, were treated to a live fire
exercise put on by the staff at Warwick Castle. For those of you interested in
such things the Warwick Trebuchet is the largest functioning trebuchet in the
world standing at 60 feet high and weighing in at 22 tons, it can sling a
flaming projectile up to 325 yards. And
as you can tell from the pictures below they really meant live fire.
